Rovaniemi 20.11.2017

With a night train I reach Rovaniemi at 7.14 in the morning. Whatever morning, it is getting light at 9.00-9.30! I am glad of the -3 Celsius degrees and the snow (it started at one third of the way from Helsinki to Rovaniemi) and go out for a walk. First I want to find the bus station (I found on net - free wireless and plugs on train - a map of the city and it is pretty close) and then I see what I have time for. With my backpack I reach the bus station when a bus to north was about to leave (including my destination). I ask if I can go with them even if I have a ticket for the next bus and they tell me to wait. Fair! So I go for a walk...

Over Kemijoki river is Ounasvaara, a hill with a few hiking trails. The highest point is at 203m above sea level and, as it is full of snow, I start to go up after the bridge Jätkänkynttilä (Lumberjack's candle bridge). The bridge is at the confluence of Ounasjoki and Kemijoki rivers. After the bridge I follow the road for about 100 meters and turn to left. I should reach the top. In fact I am not so much interested about the top, I only want  to walk in the snow. I walk and walk, reach a viewpoint and then Royal Reindeer restaurant. It is ok, from here I just have to follow the car road to the city. And so I do! On the way I see the first free reindeers. There are no free reindeers, all of them have owners (they are marked as any domestic animal)! I am happy to see them and I follow down the road, pass near Santa Sport and reach Kiiruna and Katajaranta areas. I ask a young man about the bridge and he confirms that I can go on the bridge to downtown. I go over Kemijoki river and reach church (kirkko) of Rovaniemi. I enter on one side (it is the chapel for dead people - a car with a dead one comes when I go out of the church), pass the heroes cemetery and reach the bus station with 30 minutes before going to Saariselka (11.45).
