Maroc 19-30.08.2016 - a șaptea zi/the seventh day 26.08.2016

Dimineață... Momente zen...

Morning... Zen moments... Time doesn't matter... We both have mood for Tagharte beach. Ștefan for bath, me for exploring. So we both go to Moulaiy Hassan place, go out of medina and enter the beach.

The beach has little sand and, if you look on Google Maps, it was more narrow. There is a small layer of dry sand, then a layer of wet, hard sand and, probably very close, the rock layer. We put the clothes close to water and Ștefan goes for a bath. It is ok for me to go for a walk and for him to let the clothes here. There are some boys playing volley, others are running, there are women dressed in burkas (less then on the other beach), the beach is airy... We can see the small island of Essaouira and the island of Mogador with some ruins on them. I read that they are from phoenician times.

The beach is situated in modern, new Essaouira, out of medina. It feels like there are two different cities, far away in time and close as distance. As a proof you can see some images lower with camels (male camels) and white, clean buildings in the background.

There are some ruins at the horizon and I head to them. On the way I pass beside the lifeguard point, the ones practicing paragliding, the area with camels, the area with high, clean horses, the ATV riders letting signs on the beach, surfers, kitesurfers... There is a line of camels walking slowly in the horizon. For sure the owner took them for a walk :)! As I walk, medina seems to be more far behind me. Even with some people around, I feel like going out of civilization to wilderness. And I love the hot atmosphere under the berber turban. On the left I pass a rocky area which used to be a swamp, with some gulls gathered here. I get close to the ruins targeted at the beginning.

At that moment I didn't know what it was and I was fascinated. You can easily see the ruins of an ancient construction, you can see holes from the wood pylons or wood bars. By reading on internet (source of the source), I find out what it is about. Thus the constructions of sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah and destroyed in XVIII century had three defensive fortresses: Borj el Bermil on Essaouira small island, Borj el Assa on island of Mogador (the ones I wrote a few lines upper) and Borj el Baroud or Borj el Oued at the mouth of Oued Ksob river. This served as a store for gunpower situated somewhere between Bab Marrakech and Sidi Mogdoul. It was built on the ruins of an old fortress, probably Carthaginian and a Phoenician ”megdul”. It was used as a lighthouse with wood fire and destroyed in January, 13, 1856 in a flood on Oued Ksob river. It was supposed as a part of phoenician fortress on island of Mogador and that the name Mogador comes from the Phoenician ”migdol” meaning watchtower.

I walk between the ruins of the old watchtower, climb some of them, I am delighted by the imagine of some french tourists relaxed under the walls and of some Morroccans guarding the horizon from the top of the ruins, I jump from a wall to another or go deep between ruins, I observe a camel owner passing beside de ruins and film and take pictures of them when I go down to the sand level... Images say more than words...

I turn back on the bach in the same zen landscape, go out of the sand at the middle of the beach, clean my feet and look for something to eat in the new city. I don't find something convenient as price and ingredients (I search for a falafel and I don't find it even if they have in menus) and go back on the walking seefront to the end of the beach to the Bab Sbaa gate of medina.

Before the gate I see a stone monument mentioning the presence of medina in UNESCO patrimony: ”Essaouira is an exceptional example of a late XVIII century fortified town, build according to the principles of contemporary European military arhitecture in north-african context. Since its foundation, it has been a major international trading scaport, linking Morocco and its saharian hinterland with Europe and the rest of the world”. There is a touristic train nearby and the poster of High economic, commercial and engineering studies and the map of the city.

I enter medina, walk around on the streets and find Ștefan at the riad. We relax and in the evening we go again for a walk, separately this time. I always find something to explore. I reach Moulaiy Hassan place and visit a bazaar inside the building on the left, make some pictures on the ocean shore (on the rocks between medina and the ramparts pf Scala of the port) an in the big market I am attracted by the fish sellers. I deal with them for a convenient price and eat some lobsters, oceanic fish and specialities. I obtain in the price some specific sweets...

E ok!

On Rue Skala (the street going under the walls of medina to the ocean) and other streets I find my way to riad. Shops, colors, cats, shadows... Thankful for the whole day, I make a shower and g oto sleep. There's another day tomorrow... I remembered. Before leaving in the evening walks we talked at the riad for another night. It is ok!
